
Cambodia's Independence Day coincided with the end of the celebration for the birthday of the King's father and the beginning of Phnom Penh's annual Water Festival when over a million people pour into the city to celebrate the end of the rainy season, the reversal of the Tonle Sap River and the beginning of the fishing season. This is Independence Monument, built when Cambodia won its indpeendence from France in 1953. Former visitors to Phnom Penh may note the new Wat nearing completion immediately in front of the old one on Sihanouk Blvd.
